E-safety

At Manor Lodge, the children regularly use the internet to support their learning. In school, we have regular 'e-safety' activities to remind children of the importance of keeping themselves safe online.

At home, sometimes children can be given unsupervised access to the Internet. This, potentially, allows them to access all kinds of society (both good and bad) and bring them virtually into their homes.

Here are some tips and useful links to help you to keep your children safe online:

The
BBC website has lots of helpful tips on how to stay safe online.

The
CEOP website is the UK's leading agency for the protection of children online.

This
newsround website has lots of advice and tips as well.

This Safe Search is a Google customised safe search engine for kids.

Hector's world -cartoons is a part of CEOP's thinkuknow website for young children. Watch Hector and his friends learning how to use their computers safely!

KidSMART is jam packed with information and advice on safer social networking. View top tips associated with using social networking sites and watch videos of young people explaining what social networking is and how to use sites safely.

Anti-bullying week:

Stories about cyber bullying, online safety, or more specifically online danger, are hard to avoid.

The internet and new communications technology, like all environments and media, can be used and abused. Thankfully the positive aspects far outweigh the negative.
Simple steps for online safety:

  • Encourage them to tell you if they come across any sites that could cause offence or pose some kind of danger.
  • Look in the help menu of your browser for security options - you can, to a certain extent, restrict what sites and downloads your children can access.
  • If you do catch them on a site that you think is unsuitable, don't assume that they made the choice to go there. It's not that hard for a determined webmaster to disguise a website to catch innocent visitors.

Look at Chat danger website for information on how to stay safe whilst chatting online.
